Symbian Foundation belum lama ini mengumumkan bahwa pihaknya sudah melakukan pencapaian baru dalam upaya meng-open source-kan sistem operasi Symbian dengan merilis platform microkernel (EKA2) dan dukungan untuk development kit di bawah Eclipse Public License (EPL). Menurut Symbian Foundation diluncurkannya kernel ini lebih cepat sembilan bulan dari jadwal sebenarnya. Ini adalah momentum positif dalam rangka migrasi OS tersebut.

Pergerakan Symbian diawali dari peluncuran security code di bawah EPL. Real-time microkernel besutan Symbian akan menjadi jantung dari platform tersebut, karena bertanggung jawab untuk mengatur semua system resource dan frameworks tempat aplikasi dan proses dalam ponsel bersandar.

“The release of the microkernel demonstrates three vital, guiding principles of the foundation: first, the commitment of many community members to the development of the platform – in this case, Accenture, ARM, Nokia and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) all made contributions; second, progress in fulfilling our commitment to a complete open source release of Symbian; and third, a tangible example of providing the most advanced mobile platform in the world,” Lee Williams, executive director, Symbian Foundation, said.
